A very few Americans find that being enrolled in Original Medicare is all the protection they need. But most people find that enrolling in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan or a Medicare Supplement Plan better meets their needs. As of 2017, of the 57 million Medicare beneficiaries in the U.S., about one-third (33%) are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
But is it the best choice for you?
A Medicare Advantage Plan (sometimes referred to as Part C) is an insurance plan offered through a private company that has established an annual contract with Medicare. A Medicare Advantage Plan will provide you with all the Part A and B benefits, as well as some additional services not paid for under Original Medicare, including limited vision, hearing, and dental services.
Prescription drug coverage is also offered through most Medicare Advantage plans. Most--but not all-- Medicare Advantage plans include Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) coverage.
While they cover all Medicare services, Medicare Advantage plans may charge different out-of-pocket expenses to beneficiaries. They may also have different rules for how you can access those services. These costs will depend on plan you select. Some plans charge a monthly premium, while others do not. Some also have additional deductibles.
Bottom line: Each insurance company's Medicare Advantage plan is different (and to complicate things further, one insurance company may offer two or more different types of Medicare Advantage plans).
